Erectile dysfunction (ED) means that you cannot get a proper erection. There are various causes. However, most cases are due to narrowing of the arteries that take blood to the penis. This is due to a build up of atheroma in these arteries. This is similar to the way the heart arteries are affected in people with heart disease. As with heart disease, smoking and heavy alcohol drinking are important risk factors. Most cases of ED can be treated.

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine.
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Visual disturbances
* Awareness of your heart beat
* Indigestion
* Low blood pressure
* High blood pressure
* Nosebleeds
* Chest pain

Viagra tablets contain the active ingredient sildenafil, which is a medicine used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (impotence). Sildenafil is called a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, and works by preventing the action of a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. PDE-5 inhibitors do not automatically trigger erections. Sexual stimulation also is needed to start the whole process. The medications enable a more complete response to sexual stimulation.

Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. Sildenafil is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow can cause an erection. Sildenafil does not cure erectile dysfunction or increase sexual desire. Sildenafil does not prevent pregnancy or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Sildenafil comes as a tablet to take by mouth.
Sildenafil must not be taken with any form of nitrate medication, as this combination can produce a severe drop in blood pressure that can cause dizziness, fainting, or even a heart attack. Nitrate medications include the following:
* glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (used for angina or heart failure)
* nicorandil
* amyl nitrate
